after napping for ten minutes i find myself awake again, mind churning with movie thoughts. spoilers ahoy! adventures abound!

tintin

what a lovely film! the opening sequence alone had my hands fluttering with joy. it was clever, informative, and so slickly animated. all the little touches and nods to the creator and the world-wide love affair with tintin and snowy were perfect.

i'll admit i had been warring with the movie's animation style for a while though. motion capture is kind of eh to me, not from a technical standpoint but a purpose one. during the first half of the film i kept going back and forth trying to decide if the movie should have been live action or not. several sequences--key stealing aboard the karaboudjan, seabattle upon the high seas, the milanese nightingale--all proved why it needed to be animated. every part of these sequences and many others are perfectly rendered and allow the storytelling to spin off into directions you just wouldn't think were possible. i loved, loved, loved the scenes where haddock spun between present day and his ancester's past. and the swordfights were bitching.

and haddock on failure, i was sitting there thinking, "where were these words 10 years ago."

spielberg gives good action and good chase scenes. tintin is proof that he delivers these things in any medium.

i will say that it takes a bit of time for the film to get going and some of the comedic elements fell a little flat. but those canaries.

definitely recommended!

sherlock holmes!
apparently i am a fan of elaborate sequences with blink and you miss elements of danger, humor, chasing, and fisticuffs and like tintin, sherlock holmes had this in spades!

what can i say about sherlock holmes: a game of shadows that hasn't been said before? it was a good movie?

unfortunately, this movie had less "pick up some clues and figure it out for yourself," hints along the way. on the other hand, i felt moriarty's goal was pretty much spelled out at the end of the first film so the mystery was how instead of what and why.

top five favorite !!

1. S. FRY AS MYCROFT HOLMES!
2. GYPSY CAMP AND THEY STEAL THE SCARF HIS WIFE MADE FOR HIM WHOSE HIDEOUSNESS HOLMES TEASED HIM OVER AND WATSON PUNCHED A MAN IN THE FACE AND THEN GOT DRUNK AND DANCED THE NIGHT AWAY!
3. RDJ AS SHERLOCK HOLMES IN RED, SILKY PANTS AND SMEARED LIPSTICK! did anyone else have a brandon lee moment? when he was going around a door corner or something?
4. SHERLOCK HOMES FACE WHEN HE REALIZED HE HAD MADE A MISTAKE AND MISCALCULATED
a. MORAN! HOLY HANNAH HE WAS A BRILLIANT WATSON FOIL!
b. MORIARTY! I HAVE NO IDEA WHO THIS ACTOR WAS BUT HE WAS PERFECTLY CHILLING!
c. LIE WIATH ME
e. COSSACK FIGHT IN DA CLUB!
f. HOOK GUNS BUILDING
x. BAGPIPES COAT SNATCHING HAND HOLDING LOVE!!
5. EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED EVER!

the film was so chock full of textual love between holmes and watson. so much fucking love! but the thing that killed me at the moment holmes went over was that watson was there. he didn't die alone, y'all. he didn't die alone! this is important! THEIR LOVE IS FOREVER!

basically, i felt the humor was on point, the plot predictable but with enough thrilling moments it didn't feel tired or boring, a wee bit more steampunk could have been used, and female characters should do a little more than look good.

i know i'm going to be buy this when it comes out! and i do hope to see a third.

Jared Harris has had big roles on Fringe and Mad Men, but I'm pretty sure he's still best known for being Richard Harris' son (classic Irish actor and rabblerouser, known these days as The Dumbledore Who Didn't Live).
